Police arrested a 29-year-old man on Friday night for allegedly stealing money from an ATM located on Mata Road in East Rajiv Nagar in Sector 14. Police said the suspect previously worked as a security guard at the ATM, but that he had been unemployed since April 2020. .

According to the police, the suspect, Guddu Kumar Choudhary, knew how to disrupt the cash flow by turning off the ATM when the withdrawal was made by any customer and later used to withdraw the same money.

On Friday evening, Choudhary was hiding inside the server room behind the ATM to steal cash when a private company van arrived on the scene and its occupants spotted him, the agency said. police.

An FIR was registered under sections 380 (robbery in dwelling house), 454 (hidden house) and 511 (attempt to commit offences) of the Indian Penal Code at Sector 14 Police Station on the basis of a complaint filed by the company depositing money in ATMs.

Choudhary, from Bihar, lived in rented accommodation in Chakkarpur village in Gurugram Sector 28, police said.

According to the FIR, Choudhary had worked at the same company as an ATM security guard and was identified on the spot by one of the employees, the FIR read.

Police said the suspect knew how to disconnect an ATM from its server to disrupt cash flow. “Money withdrawn by a customer is not disbursed in such a situation. The suspect used to turn on the power when the client left while hiding inside the server rooms. Shortly after, the ATM disbursed money it used to steal,” said a police officer with knowledge of the matter.

Satender Singh, Police Station Officer (SHO) of Sector 14 Police Station, said a duplicate key to the server room lock was also recovered from Choudhary’s.

“Just before being arrested, the suspect had managed to disrupt the cash flow of a customer’s withdrawal and was about to steal that money but got caught,” SHO said, adding that his accommodation in Chakkarpur had been searched but nothing had been found. “Further investigation is underway in the matter,” he said.
